An estimated 22,218 wild great apes were lost between 2005 and 2011. This is partly due to a multi-billion dollar criminal trade which illegally captures and traffics live apes to domestic and international markets. At a meeting of the US Advisory Council on Wildlife Trafficking, a representative of AWF testified on this ongoing crisis. Meanwhile Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio is collaborating with Netflix to release a documentary, Virunga, about the threat to Gorillas in Eastern Congo.
